{"id":97,"date":"2017-07-10T07:48:38","date_gmt":"2017-07-10T07:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kitaw.info\/en\/?p=97"},"modified":"2018-06-27T07:49:28","modified_gmt":"2018-06-27T07:49:28","slug":"track-the-progress-of-ai-and-machine-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kitaw.info\/en\/2017\/07\/10\/track-the-progress-of-ai-and-machine-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Track the Progress of AI and Machine Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This project of the EFF on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/ai\/metrics\">measuring the progress of AI Research\u00a0<\/a> (collectively elaborated through a notebook is <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ai-metrics\/ai-metrics\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">hosted on Github<\/span><\/a>) collects problems and metrics\/datasets from the AI research literature, and tracks progress on them.<\/p>\n<p>It is indeed a promising\u00a0pilot to\u00a0answer questions like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the ratio of hype to real progress in AI?<\/li>\n<li>What kinds of problems have been well solved by current machine learning techniques, which ones are close to being solved, and which ones remain exceptionally hard?<\/li>\n<li>And if the project is well\u00a0followed up\u00a0in the future\u00a0: to what extent can such progress be used\u00a0to foster social and economic development globally?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0pilot\u00a0is using interesting methodologies that can help in understanding the current state of these technologies and raise meangful debate around the technical, political and legal issues and dilemmas they raise.<\/p>\n<p>A promising start in defining metrics that could be enhanced with additional stakeholders&#8217; perspectives including linkges\u00a0to &#8216;AI for\u00a0development&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Let us not forget that AI and\u00a0machine learning methods can threaten safety of citizens particularly if in the hands of oppressive regimes which may\u00a0raise\u00a0wider and\u00a0vital concerns than\u00a0mere violation of\u00a0privacy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This project of the EFF on\u00a0measuring the progress of AI Research\u00a0 (collectively elaborated through a notebook is hosted on Github) collects problems and metrics\/datasets from the AI research literature, and tracks progress on them.
