It is the second-most spoken Semitic language in the world after Arabic, with close to 60 million people speaking it as their first or second language. Amharic has a unique <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ge%CA%BDez_script\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">script called Ge&#8217;ez<\/a>, which has been in use for over 2000 years. The alphabet has 33 basic characters, each of which has seven forms depending on which vowel is pronounced. Each syllable is represented by a character. Written from left to right, the Ge&#8217;ez script is also used to write other languages in Ethiopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"paragraph_VpMwZgMaBt5\">The language has a rich literary tradition, dating back to the 13th century. Many of these works are religious in nature, and Amharic is one of the languages used in the <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethiopian_Orthodox_Tewahedo_Church\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ethiopian Orthodox Church<\/a>&#8216;s liturgy. C&#8217;est la deuxi\u00e8me langue s\u00e9mitique la plus parl\u00e9e au monde apr\u00e8s l&#8217;arabe, avec pr\u00e8s de 60 millions de personnes qui la parlent comme premi\u00e8re ou deuxi\u00e8me langue.
